To connect to a Public Contact Server:

1. Choose Server Connections from the Define menu. The Define Server Connections dialog box appears. In the scrolling list under Connected Servers are listed any Public Contact Servers to which you are connected. If you are not connected to any (or if this is the first time you are connecting to a Server), this area is blank.

2. Click Add Server. The Add/Locate dialog box appears and lists any Public Contact Servers found on your network. If there are multiple zones on your network, they are listed in the Zones list on the left. Selecting a zone displays the Servers on it in the Servers list on the right.

NOTE: If no Public Contact Servers appear in this dialog box, verify that AppleTalk is active, and/or that a Public Contact Server exists on your network.

3. Add a Public Contact Server by selecting it in the Servers list and clicking OK, or by double-clicking its name.

You return to the Define Server Connections dialog box. Notice that the Public Contact Server you selected now appears in the Connected Servers list. The Public Categories stored on the Server appear in the scrolling list in the upper-right.

4. Select the Categories you want to subscribe to. In the scrolling list on the right, highlight a Category and click. This places a checkmark in front of the Category name and includes the Category's Contacts in your Contact File. When you select a Category, any description attached to it appears in the Category Info list below the Category list. The number of Contacts the Category contains is listed above the Category Info list.

5. With the name of the connected Server selected, set its update frequency from the pop-up menu. The default update frequency is five minutes. The update frequency indicates how often your Now Contact application checks the Public Contact Server for new Public Contacts or modifications to existing Public Contacts.

NOTE: To update Public Contacts on this Server immediately, click Update Now.

6. Select the Alert when deleting checkbox if you want to receive an alert when a Public Contact is deleted. You can then save this Contact to a Private Category in your Contact File in order not to lose the Contact information.

7. Click Done. You return to your Contact File.

NOTE: Installing a single copy of Now Contact on both a desktop Macintosh and a PowerBook is an acceptable way to take your Contacts with you when you travel. Be aware, however, that you won't be allowed to connect to the Public Contact Server with both machines simultaneously. Quit the application (or go offline) on one Macintosh before connecting with the other. Also, you will be required to wait the amount of time specified as the update frequency for the Public Contact Server before connecting with the second Macintosh.
